What the players say – Hawthorn Citizens
We chatted to Hawthorn Citizens star Brook Horsford in the lead up to tomorrow’s Youth Boy’s (3) Grand Final, who believes their best Footy will be good enough on the day. Brook said, “This year has been such a fun year for us. We’re all really good mates and really close within the club, so this would just cap it all off so we’re happy to be playing in a Grand Final”. When asked whether or not his side has any pressure on them after being the standout team in the competition this season, Brooke stated, “We’re confident that we can get the job done, but we certainly respect Bulleen Templestowe and what they’ve able to do, so we’re embracing being the hunted but also not taking the opposition lightly because they’re a great club”. As far as players to look out for from the opposition, Brook said him & his side will focus more on themselves rather than the opposition, but expects a few things to be mentioned on game day around a few of the Bulleen Templestowe players. Brook is also confident star teammates Dylan Wyer will have a big impact on the day, whilst backing the rest of his team to follow suit.

What the players say – Bulleen Templestowe
These teams have played each other 3 times this year, however on two of those occasions it’s been less than 20 points. Bulleen Templestowe star Lucas Leggio says “Whilst we have played Hawthorn 3 times already and lost. I have full confidence and faith that we can get the job done in the GF. We are not going to let our prior losses get to our heads and we will play our own game”. We then asked Lucas about who he expects to perform from his, “Definitely Zach Hanrahan, Patrick Parnell, Luke Mills, Callum Grace and Sebastian Cookson. These players will have a massive say on the outcome as they are prime ball movers. Honesty our whole team can be a major problem, but the ones I’ve mentioned can do some damage. He’s also cautious regarding some of Hawthorn Citizens star players, identifying Dylan Wyer, Harry Edwards & Charlie Abbot as players they need to contain in order to win the game. Lucas gave an honest answer when asked about the nerves for Sunday’s game, “To be honest, personally I am feeling both nervous and excited for the game. The team’s vibe is more excited because we get to play an old rival and show that we can beat them”.

What the players say – Whitehorse
Whitehorse skipper Tom Whiston came down for a chat during the week to talk about their Grand Final match up against Ashburton, with this game the hardest to pick a winner for with both teams having narrow victories within the last 4 weeks against one another. Tom said, “We’re really excited with the prospect of playing in a Grand Final. We have worked hard all year for this moment”. We asked who he though would be the key players from his side, with Tom saying Whitehorse Forward James Murray as a player who could have a say on the outcome of the match. He also thinks their key back James Cameron will help set things up behind the footy. Given the evenness between the two sides, Tom said that they will need to keep an eye on Ashburton stars Oscar Smith, Ben Miller & Thomas Tonkin to ensure they minimise their impact on the game.

What the players say – Ashburton
We spoke with Ashburton player Ben Miller about his thoughts for Sunday’s game, with the two teams so evenly matched. Ben believes his side is ready to go, having good numbers & a healthy list of players to rotate through when needed. Ben then said, “Kicking straight will be crucial in this game. We missed a few gettable one’s last time we played them, and we ended up going down so I think the team who is most accurate in front of goals will go along way towards winning on the day”. Ben also said, “I think the midfield battle will be crucial, with our ruck James Orton primed to give our mids first use”. With Ben being his side general down back, he identified the importance of keeping on their toes with the Whitehorse key forwards, as he felt their leading patterns were able to curtail his & other defenders influence on the game last time they played one another.
